Zebra Mussel Sampler multi-plate sampler
This multi-plate sampler is ideal for collecting density and size distribution data on Zebra and Quagga Mussels (Dreissena spp.).
It is constructed with four Masonite plates that are 6, 8, 10 and 12” square, with the smallest plate on top. The plates are separated by 1” lengths of PVC pipe. Masonite is a good, economical substrate. Because it is disposable, it helps prevent cross-contamination among water bodies. Weights and tether lines can be attached.
The sampler is usually deployed so the top plate is at least 0.75m under the water surface. Water deeper than 1m is better. At the end of the sampling season, retrieve the sampler and carefully disassemble it in the lab, scraping the mussels from each side of the plate. Count and measure the individuals. Specimens can be preserved in 70% ethanol.
